Congratulations to the University of Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) concrete canoe team for winning 1st place in the National Concrete Canoe Competition in June! Every year, CME proudly sponsors this team of outstanding civil engineering students that design, construct, and race their canoe made entirely of reinforced concrete. The top twenty three teams in the country competed at the national competition this year, held at the University of Pittsburg at Johnstown June 19-21. UNR placed 1st overall in Races, 2nd in Design Paper, 2nd in Oral Presentation, and 8th in Final Product to beat out the competition and win the national championship, a title earned for the second time in the school’s history. UNR received a $5,000 scholarship for taking 1st place in the competition. The team’s canoe, Alluvium, themed after Nevada’s state fossil – the Ichthyosaur- weighed 176 lbs and measured 22 feet long, carrying up to four paddlers for the racing portion of the competition. UNR has placed in the top five for the last eight years of participating in the national competition, giving them the highest average placement of any school in history. Keep it up, Wolf Pack!
